Transformed a Cultural Shift Into a Continuous Content Engine

Who Are Zavvi?

Zavvi Entertainment & Pop Culture is a vinyl record, Blu-ray, book, and collectibles retailer. The brand taps into cultural trends around collecting, limited editions, and tangible entertainment experiences.

Its content opportunities extend beyond products into conversations about fandom, culture, and changing consumer behaviour. The times have changed when it was the norm to buy physical media and increasingly, collectors, cinephiles and readerly customers are often choosing to buy over subscription or streaming.

The Content Challenge

The requirement was not for a single explainer or campaign. Zavvi needed a continuous content engine that could explore different angles of the same broader cultural shift:

Digital ownership is fragile, while physical media offers something that streaming and cloud-based platforms cannot.

The content needed to speak to audiences who might be:

  • Frustrated with online streaming
  • Drawn to the tangible experience of ownership
  • Concerned about disappearing digital libraries
  • Interested in collecting and physical formats
  • Part of changing music, gaming, film, and reading communities

To this end Zavvi asked to have a consistent stream of 15-20 articles per month that are based on real data, cultural moments, and community voice as opposed to listicles.

Our Approach

We didn’t consider it a campaign, but an always-on trend desk.

Rather than writing separate articles, each delved into a different facet of a wider cultural phenomenon. This ensured that the content programme had a familiar editorial perspective and that individual stories could react to new developments.

Research was driven by tangible cultural signals, including:

  • Vinyl sales and changing music consumption
  • Industry closures and shutdowns
  • Consumer petitions and community movements
  • Changing reading habits
  • Gamer behaviour and disappearing digital games
  • The growing conversation around digital ownership

This allowed the content to remain timely and credible while still connecting back to Zavvi’s broader position within physical media.

The Content Engine

From the flagship piece, we established a consistent monthly rhythm of supporting content, diving deeper into individual categories while maintaining the same editorial standards.

15-20 articles per month

Timely pieces spanning music, movies, books, and gaming.

One central cultural insight

Every article connected back to the idea that **digital ownership is conditional, while physical ownership is not.

Evidence-led storytelling

Real data points, industry developments, cultural moments, and community sentiment were used instead of assumptions.

Consistent editorial quality

Research depth, tone, and editorial standards remained consistent across the growing content library.

Built for conversation

The idea was to provide a recognizable voice to the larger debate about physical media to the Zavvi brand.

The Intended Impact

The focus of this content was not just product-led, but was centered on capitalizing on repeat engagement with the audience that appreciates ownership and the emotional and practical benefits of physical formats.

In a market that is subscription based and no longer dominated by digital libraries, the idea was to make physical media feel relevant, valuable, meaningful and worth owning, whilst at the same time making it feel nostalgic.
