Turning a Complex Subscription Into a Clear Business Proposition
SumUp is a global payments and business tools platform for small businesses that let them accept payments and run their business day to day. It has an ecosystem of card readers, invoicing options, payment links and business accounts that simplifies cashless business transactions, ensures timely payment and makes a business less cumbersome and complicated.
SumUp One was a new subscription offering by SumUp that brought several existing tools – including lower transaction fees, unlimited invoicing, and quicker payouts – into a single package at a lower cost for small businesses.
The challenge was to communicate the value of the bundle without making the content feel like a sales pitch.
The Core Challenge
The content needed to achieve two things at once:
Simplify the offering
SumUp One combined multiple benefits into a single subscription, which could make the proposition feel complicated. The content needed to break it down in a way that made the value immediately understandable and helped readers feel confident about signing up.
Speak to small business owners
The audience consisted of business owners who may not have much time to evaluate new subscriptions and may be cautious about committing to another recurring expense.
The content therefore needed to address practical concerns such as:
- Cash flow
- Transaction costs
- Invoicing workload
- Managing multiple business tools
- Hesitation around subscriptions
- Flexibility and cancellation
The Content Approach
This wasn’t a technical explainer or a traditional educational article. It required a conversion-focused structure that still felt informative and trustworthy.
Instead of presenting SumUp One as a list of product specifications, we built the article around its three key advantages:
- Lower transaction fees
Explained through the real-world impact of reducing the cost attached to each transaction.
- Unlimited invoicing
Positioned around the practical challenge of managing invoices and avoiding unnecessary limitations.
- Quicker payouts
Tightly linked to cash flow and the need for cash to flow into a company more quickly.
Each feature was made into a solution as opposed to just another feature on a product page.
What We Shaped The Content?
- Pain-point first: All features were tied to a real small business pain point instead of a technical specification.
- Benefit-led structure: There are clear sections when fees are reduced, unlimited invoice and faster payouts were given clear sections to scan.
- Subscription issues solved: Reduced fees, unlimited invoicing, and faster payouts were given clear sections for easy scanning.
- Naturally integrated SEO: Content signally targeted for the keywords “SumUp One” and similar product-related terms without affecting readability.
- Non-aggressive tone: The article did appear as informational and not too promotional.
The Intended Impact
The approach was to provide SumUp with a much better avenue to convey the value of its new combined product.
The content framed SumUp One as a viable cost-saving tool for small businesses, avoiding the impression that it’s another subscription to handle.
The content was tailored to help small business owners better understand how the product will benefit them on a day-to-day business basis, thereby decreasing hesitation, increasing trust, and motivating more small business owners to sign up.
